Walking Clubs

Walking Clubs that meet on a regularly scheduled basis

both Calgary and Edmonton have Greyhound Walking Clubs that meet on a regularly scheduled basis. Winnipeg also has a summer walk group that meets each Wednesday (beginning April 6, 2016) at 7 pm at the Duck Pond at Assiniboine Park. The focus of these walks is to bring the greyhounds and their families together for socialization and exercise.

No membership is required to join the walking clubs. Anyone with a greyhound, greyhound cross, or other sighthound is encouraged to participate. The walks also provide the opportunity for non-Greyhound owners to spend time with our greyhounds and to learn more about this gentle breed from our adoptive families.

The walks also raise public awareness of the breed, as participants take time to talk with people we meet along the way. Both Calgary and Edmonton have an abundance of greyt walking trails and the location of the walks will vary. Scheduling of the walks is done by each club. Scheduled walks may be cancelled on short notice due to weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rains, or extreme temperatures.

Walk routes are chosen to appeal to the broadest range of both greyhounds and their humans. The walks typically last 1 – 1½ hours at a leisurely pace, covering between 3 to 5 kilometers – the majority of which will be level terrain.

All participants are required to come prepared with poop bags to clean up after their dog. Ensure that you and your greyhound are dressed appropriately for the weather. Retractable leashes are discouraged. Please check with each walk club as to their policy on non-greyhound canine participants.
